I would bump up Poulter but otherwise this gets the rare Clare-Fran 98% agree. I like that Michael Gandolfini is not really trying to ape the types of characters his dad played - being in the Sopranos prequel movie does not count; no one saw that and it doesn't exist - and he seems really funny. Him poking himself with the morphine kinda the moment of the movie to me outside of when Poulter says the IED "rang his bell."
I have watched so much press from this film now and the way Cosmo Jarvis has no tolerance for any of it >>>>>>
Melton does really need a big starring role asap but I'm glad he seemingly spends 80% of his time hanging out with his mom. Of all the millennials they put in the Criterion Closet he seemed like the most ball knower.
i like poulter its just hard because i’ve functionally never seen him before except in memes about having eyebrows.
honestly in revision i might bump gandolfini to #1. when he pokes himself it’s soooo funny, but right before the grenade comes in the window, he also gives this really tender expression that set the tone and that i remember. i think he could prob be a major actor if we all stand together on this
CJ has no patience for the press but i like that in his weird tough guy stoicism he also clearly is not annoyed by his buddies but by working. i’m going to write a comedy for him and ATJ. like the brian tyree henry / ATJ stuff in my favorite movie bullet train
melton is so major and he loveeeees his mom. one of the best to do it on instagram and film alike.
kit connor went to the boys school attached to my school and my friend was in a production of hairspray with him and there’s this one video she showed me where he is shrieking like a banshee and it was really weird in an ew way not a haha way while standing on a table when they were messing about in rehearsals and for that reason he is the least coolest ever
I also did not notice Noah Centineo despite being very familiar with his work on the Netflix streaming service. Odd. I thought Melton was incredible in this. When he and his boys showed up, he just popped off the screen. Crazy that a Riverdale alum appears to have real juice (not unlike Michelle Williams and Dawson’s Creek I suppose).
clare usually i find myself disagreeing with 99% of your takes (this is why i love reading you so much) but for once we are completely on the same page… you have so eloquently explained what my bf and i spent 20 minutes trying to articulate in the car the other night about the discourse nightmare surrounding this movie. truly well done. also you have done will poulter a grave disservice but i will forgive you because he is definitely the annoying kind of british😭
i don't even dislike will poulter...! i just DON'T know him. fran texted me that he's in midsommar (a movie i like) and i was like... now why would i remember that
he has an iconic “little babie” filmography (movies he was in when he was a little babie and had not yet grown into his eyebrows)- like the maze runner and we’re the millers. however! i latched on to him as Eustace Scrubb from voyage of the dawn treader bc i was raised mormon and i watched those movies a lot😭😭
and he was SUCH a good pull for Eustace…he had that face where he looked like a 46 year old man had been cursed to be in the body of a child and he had that stupid fucking accent, and so he could march around and pout and talk about how much he hates his fucking cousins and he could argue with a rat and it WORKED
It's like, yeah, sure, there's a famous American war movie with Martin Sheen and Marlon Brando and Robert Duvall, but that is just a Francis Ford Coppola movie. Just like there is also one with Tom Hanks and Matt Damon that is just a Steven Spielberg movie.
Alex Garland finally made the first movie about American Warfare by placing one of its direct perpetrators not behind the scenes à la Bigelow but instead directly behind the camera.
Ok saw this movie 2 days ago and it’s been occupying my entire brain space since. Have I been listening to “call on me” on repeat since then? Yes. I never saw Charles Melton in Riverdale but do I need to watch now?? Also blew me away how half of these guys were British and I didn’t realize it until watching all the press!! Interested to see what Cosmo does in the future. Love how they all got matching tats after this.
I was praying for a post like this from FBN, and very personally gratified to see Melton and Jarvis (❤️) getting some love. I'm curious if/how Jarvis' "music career" played into your evaluations for his ranking?
kind of a non-entity, tbh. i like when guys have a marginal and embarrassing interest like that but i prefer when it's henry cavill gaming or, like, posting. reminds me of this: https://youtu.be/cdIcP12Kd5k?si=mIre654o4OHZP7xK
i'm more interested in the fact that (based on one google search) he seemingly has a wife who is completely anonymous. but in the interest of length i omitted both these considerations

TRUTH: SPOKEN

LMAO

i’m actually surprised there aren’t any other juiced riverdale alumni. there’s just so many of them
i loved when melton was like “everyone shut the fuck up eyes on me”

what's he in that i should know/remember??
he has an iconic “little babie” filmography (movies he was in when he was a little babie and had not yet grown into his eyebrows)- like the maze runner and we’re the millers. however! i latched on to him as Eustace Scrubb from voyage of the dawn treader bc i was raised mormon and i watched those movies a lot😭😭
okay, this is awesome to learn. like, that's Eustace Scrubb from voyage of the dawn treader !!!
and he was SUCH a good pull for Eustace…he had that face where he looked like a 46 year old man had been cursed to be in the body of a child and he had that stupid fucking accent, and so he could march around and pout and talk about how much he hates his fucking cousins and he could argue with a rat and it WORKED
lots to unpack here....
i think maybe i might have just aged out of poulter's tweeny bopper career by a few years, and that's why he's not a major figure to me
Wait I literally forgot he's Eustace Scrubb <3 I have only seen the third Maze Runner movie but I loved it
he’s literally eustace scrubb!! MY eustace!!!
Spot on.

i've never seen riverdale either. could be something for us both to get into
Here also to say that as a film nerd I also had no clue Centineo was in it until I was on Letterboxd after the movie! Probably for the best!
love a bunch of guys
This is sooo annoying because I did not want to watch warfare but now I want to…
I have this one fancam of Charles melton in May December booked marked on Twitter and I watch it once a month and cry
can you send it
yeah sorry you would probably love it

I fell asleep watching The Report btw
i remember i forced myself to watch it while eating mashed potatoes
Will you be doing an ask Clare #2? I might need your advice on some things.
