if only I couldβve done so for you on Memorial Day when he was at the same cubs game as me π sorry to have failed you, back into the abyss where I lurk from I go!!!
Just on the big screen - unfortunately I was amongst the other peasants of wrigley field in the 200 section but he was in seats with Jeremy Allen White (and David Harbour AND Jason Bateman.. what was in the water here in Chicago, idk) along the third baseline⦠SAD!
i've struggled A LOT with my substack and i've genuinely looked to yours as a success story, so this post is extremely insightful. also highlights two of my biggest personal issues in the past which are very very simple: 1) writing consistently and 2) not actively trying to grow. at this point, i understand and accept that growth has to come organically, and the foundation for that should be that i *want* to write, and i'm writing what interests me regardless of engagement
i think with substack specifically it all hinges on getting the point of forgetting you scheduled something to be posted. and i generally view not being able to find something to write about as a personal shortcoming that i need to work on, which makes me more culturally engaged overall
when i first started out i got defeatist when my twitter follows didn't necessarily translate to success here (which you note) and then when i tried reviving it i was forcing myself to write just for the sake of having Content, but that was leading me to writing pieces i hated. now making this more of a "kitchen sink" diary blog instead of only pop culture has allowed me to explore new topics that really inspire me.
yeah itβs a weird thing here of balancing self in the influencer/tweet sense and the actual content that doesnβt really translate across platforms. i love to watch famous tiktokers come here with no immediate success and freak out about it
"In the grand scheme of Substackers, I am so minor itβs embarrassing for me to even be writing this."
And yet, this post is way better Substack advice than basically every other post I've ever read on this topic (maybe tied with some of Naomi Kanakia's stuff). Thanks for writing it!
The diaristic aspect is a good point - Iβve been trying to live up to the title Projects more and not just list every movie Iβve watched that week. Iβm certainly not going to watch fewer moviesβ¦ so I try to highlight the ones that contribute to my βgoalsβ
As someone trying to find a way to one day make writing a sustainable craft financially for myself, thank you for this! This was a great springboard into interrogating how I want to go about the whole newsletter deal.
Love this and thanks for the shout out! I definitely agree about cross posting and was super surprised across all platforms how things do comparatively
This means the world to me over here, on a planet entirely of my own making, without any social grease (public or otherwise). Appreciate your clarity - check me out if you please, Iβll be checking you !
every word of this is correct but especially "this website does not contribute to your 401(k)"!!!!! many could stand to hear this!!!
Iβm a certified lurker but you inspire me β€οΈ
omgβ¦. putting INSPIRATION in my cv
hopefully no cv required youβre (officially) a famous writer now!!!

it takes so long to work out what the "angle" is and it always just ends up being "write what you want to"
Love love love this. I'm constantly intimidated by my expectations of myself and my moves on here and this grounded something in me.
