This week I ideated (again): what if I became the type of person who wakes up early every day? I already kind of do this because I have insomnia, but what if I did it on purpose? Whenever I actually get out of bed after waking up early, there is no one in the gym or I can have Coffee Time–drinking coffee while reading or doing the NYT Spelling Bee–for so long before feeling guilty about not starting work. I’m addicted to this influencer who had sex with Lil Wayne and also went to law school but doesn’t use her degree because she is a full time influencer (Inshallah let this happen to me), and she gets up before the sun to take her dog to the beach, go to pilates, and buy a $10 latte. She doesn’t seem to enjoy doing this, but I think it looks fun. Perhaps that means I should move to Los Angeles, but I’m scared of driving a car, so for now I’m just going to wake up early and start spending money on coffee that comes from outside my apartment.
I also, clearly, watched a lot of vlogs this week. Long-form vlogs are a medium we must bring back into fashion; when I watch Olivia Jade drone on about plates, it feels like I am taking the most powerful downer in the world. I am in love with these undereducated women telling me what books they’ve read recently or that they’re “in their yearly sushi phase this month.” Short-form content is a flash in the pan: vlogs are the epitome of contemporary cultural production.
Here are other things that happened this week:
I speedran MUBI
I paid for a month of MUBI to watch Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World with good intentions to also watch “other stuff on there” throughout the month of May, but didn’t. So 3 days before my subscription ended on June 10, I haphazardly watched How to Have Sex and High & Low: John Galliano.1 After realizing what the former was about, “oh brother” levels were at an all-time high. Shockingly, however, it was kind of good. I was especially taken by “Mia McKenna-Bruce” who supposedly won the “Rising Star” BAFTA this year, but more importantly 1) is 26 years old, and 2) has a child 3) by a man with “🌱 #Vegan” in his Instagram bio. 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
